Engineering Week Workshops

16 students from Hougang Secondary School attended the "Cellular Network 3G Drive Test" on 23 Oct 2009.

The students were first introduced to fundamental concepts on 2G and 3G technology in mobile communications. It was then followed by hands-on session of using Nokia phones, installed with Xpedite software (cellular network monitoring software) to monitor the 3G mobile network in RP campus. The students were asked to walk around the RP campus and took down measurements for parameters such as received signal strength, bit error rate, etc, on the activity sheet. The workshop was wrapped up by going through the measurement results and explanation on the conclusions that can be drawn from the measurements.

“What should I bundle with?” workshop was held on 23-Oct-2009as part of the workshops offered for Engineering Week 2009.

A group of 19 students from Hougang Secondary School attended the workshop this morning at LS-W2.

The workshop introduces students to simple data mining technique using both manual method and software.

All the students had a hands-on session on how to use the software, which can help them in decision making.

After the practical session, there was a data mining game and they applied what they have learnt into the competition.

In all, the workshop was well-received and everybody enjoyed the game.

“The car that runs on water” workshops was held on 21 Oct 2009 as part of the string of workshops offered for Engineering Week 2009.

A group of 21 students from Pasir Ris Secondary School attended the workshop this morning in our SEG lab W1.3.25. The students were introduced to 2 clean energy technologies namely solar panels and fuel cells. After the workshop, the students were able to appreciate how the solar panels can harvest electrical energy and how this electrical energy can be stored in the fuel cell, which is then use to power a small toy car.

We also took the chance to promote the importanceof renewable energy and also our new Diploma in Renewable Energy Engineering to the students. Special thanks to TSE Zin for assisting in the wokshop.

18 students from Pasir Ris Secondary School who joined us in the Engineering Week workshop:

"Are you a Good Decision Maker?”

This workshop introduced decision making concepts to share with the students how they can improve their decision making process when they are faced with tough situation. They get to identify their problem, criteria and alternatives and our student helpers are there to guide each team especially for the calculation portion.

It was a fun event where the students get to hands-on the idea of decision making and to try out the food at W4 canteen too.

They have equally impressed us with their active participations, ideas and questionings.

19 students from Pasir Ris Secondary School who joined us in the Engineering Week workshop:

"Automated Aquarium" workshop

The workshop introduces the students with the concepts of automation and the application of automation.

It was then followed by some hands-on session where the students get to dirty their hand and work on connecting the PLC training kit to some pushbuttons and mini lamps.

It was well received by the students and they enjoyed the whole 3-hour session.

20 students from Pasir Ris Secondary School who joined us in the Engineering Week workshop:

"Fun With HandHeld Oscilloscope" workshop

This workshop has introduced the students to various electric circuit concepts, measurement and wiring.

The students were excited to take various measurement using our handheld oscilloscopes.

Many thanks and appreciation to both TSE: Roy and Zhanglin.

Their assistance has make this workshop a success.

"Building a Biofeedback Sensor Circuit" workshop was conducted to some secondary for the Engineering week

The simple circuit built makes use of the interaction between a living being and an electronic circuit and actuate the electronic circuit to give a response by blinking a LED in the circuit.

42 students from Tampines Secondary School attended the workshop this morning in our labs. The participants were excited to build their very first electronic circuit on a breadboard. At the end of the workshop, the participants were allowed to bring home the circuit they built.

Special thanks to TSEs Bee Siang and Jessie for assisting us in the workshop. The workshop would not have gone so smoothly without them.
