Miss Denise Tan Sook Tsing, a graduate from School of Engineering’s Diploma in Industrial and Systems Engineering (DISE) in 2006, has been awarded the Singapore Logistics Association (SLA) Scholarship Award.
We are very honoured to conduct an interview with her despite her busy schedule.
Q: You are currently working at GML Logistics Pte Ltd. What are you main job duties there?
Denise: Providing quotations to customers on rates enquiries i.e.
Q: How has your study in Republic Polytechnic’s Diploma in Industrial and Systems Engineering help/benefit you in your current job?
Denise: This diploma is a stepping stone for me to the shipping/logistics environment. It enables me to have a better feel on basic operations such as inventory management and transportation.
Q: You have been awarded with the SLA Scholarship Award. How did you get selected for this scholarship and what are the requirements to get this scholarship?
Denise: There are three rounds of accessing this SLA scholarship. During the first round, SLA will look into the background, knowledge and company status upon application. For the second round, selected candidates will be informed to have an internal interview with SLA scholarship matters person-in-charge and Finance Manager. Prior to the interview, selected candidates are required to answer an essay question within 1 hour. Successful candidates will be notified by email and phone call. A topic will be given to present to the board of SLA. The final round will be accessed by the Chairman, Executive Director and Assistant Chairman.
Q: Which degree course are you pursuing now?
Denise: I am currently pursuing a Bachelor degree in Commerce Logistics and Supply chain management under Curtin University. The bridging course started in September 2009 at Singapore Institute of Materials Management and the main course will be held at Curtin Singapore campus in March 2010. The entire course duration takes about 2 years and this course allow students to go for a field trip exchange with Curtin Australia sometime in July.
Q: Despite the hectic life you have, how did you manage to balance your life?
Denise: My bridging and main courses are conducted on weekends, thus I am only left with weekdays to catch up with my family and friends. I will discipline myself to read up more resources for my studies during free time to further enhance my knowledge.
Q: Any valuable experiences or tips to share with our students?
Denise: Discipline and hardworking are the keys to success. Endeavour to the very last to make sure that I do my best. When you step into the workforce to handle real work issues, you will realise that what you will be able to apply what you have learnt as these knowledge are imprinted in your mind. Planning is essential to your career path so that you have the passion to pursue on instead of feeling regret.
